LILLINGTON, N.C. – Kevin Russ had his scrotum torn off, but he only punched his female attacker once, he testified Wednesday.

Russ, who was allegedly attacked by Rebecca Arnold Dawson, 34, on Dec. 26, 2006, said despite his special forces training, he only hit Arnold after she “mauled’ his face and tore his testicles off.
Dawson has been charged with malicious castration, a Class C felony, which carries a maximum sentence of 73 to 97 months. Her trial began Monday and prosecutors called witnesses to the stand on Wednesday.
Russ said after scratching his face multiple times, Dawson reached between his legs and yanked his scrotum “in one fluid motion.
Dawson’s defense attorney, Jason Wunsch, repeatedly asked if Russ had struck Arnold.
“I didn’t know she was reaching under my parka,” Russ said. “When she was clawing at my exposed genitals, that’s when I struck her.”
Russ said with his training, he could have defended himself at any time.
Dawson was allegedly in dispute at the time with Russ’ girlfriend, Tanya Costello. The group were celebrating the holiday and drinking, “telling stories and having a good time,” Costello said.
Costello, who was drunk, had gone to sleep sometime after 11 p.m., she said. She did not know what the argument was about, but woke up to shouting. She said she didn’t realize how severe the argument was until she saw Russ’ condition.
“He was holding himself in his hands and everything was exposed,” she said. “I became very hysterical. I threw up.”
Russ’ scrotum was successfully reattached at Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital.
Jessica Garland, a bartender at Iguana's in Lillington, took the stand Wednesday. She said Dawson grabbed her genitalia area on Feb. 2 when Dawson was at the bar. Garland did not press charges.
The trial continues on Thursday.
